Jeff Borker:

You all know what a bucket list is right things you want to do before you die of course. Now what you might not know is that US whiskey geeks have our own bucket list of pours we want to try before we die. So let's talk whiskey bucket lists on this week's double shot of whiskey Jeff Parker here your executive burns, Seward and whiskey ambassador from the classic DRAM. Back in 2012, Ian Buxton, famed scotch whisky guru wrote the book 101 World whiskies to try before you die that led to a whole series of 101 books, which became synonymous with whiskey bucket lists, Ian has recently updated his 101 craft and world whiskies to try before you die with a second edition. This book covers the globe with a world tour of whiskies from Argentina to Wales, there are a number of entries from countries where you probably didn't even know produce whiskey, the landscape is constantly changing on the world whisky scene, and each country brings their own spin on the spirit. This particular 101 edition covers both craft and larger distilleries annual will certainly appeal to whiskey newbies as well as seasoned aficionados. The books introduction gives Ian's take on the state of affairs around world whiskey. Now the rest of the book is set up kind of like a spirits travel guide. It's definitely more than just a tasting guide. Each of the 101 expressions has detailed information on the distillery the master distillers and specific expressions being highlighted. One of the best parts is that all categories of whiskey are included everything from single malt to Irish to Indian whiskies are talked about and of course, we've got a great representation from the United States with brands like belco, neighs, high West, COBOL, and new riff all of which we've included on several tasting flights. It's classic DRAM. In fact, one of our favorite American single malts Westland, American oak was featured in one of Ian's write ups as some of the more interesting countries beyond the regions where we typically are familiar with whiskey production are places like Wales, Israel, Iceland, and even Mexico and you thought tequila was the only spirit that came from south of the border overall 101 craft and world whiskies to try before you die is a great addition to your whisky library. It's a great passport enabling you to expand your whisky experience. Not only will you pick up on labels you've never known existed but you'll get great insights from Ian on all things world whisky related, we definitely recommend this book as well as all of the ins titles which are available on amazon.com or wherever books are sold today. As always, if you'd like to learn more, visit us at www dot the classic graham.com And check out our podcasts the dreamstate available on all podcasting platforms. This is Jeff Parker. Remember come for the spirits and stay for the experience. Cheers all

So here we go. We're going back to October this year. We're gonna talk a little bit about bullying. And I hope this rings brings us solid yes, that sound hits show tools ancient Pixabay with our Yano Oh word theme song Billy Gerard Rockstar radio USA radio glad you are looking for an F our number two of the best F our immediate bar none this week we are celebrating the lead singers of bands who ditch the band yes they were lead singer had a big success with the band and then decided well I'm going to jump out on my own you're a rock star and hold on tight October as you may know is is bullying prevention month or bullying Awareness month I you know I didn't I have to share with your family I'm really grow weary a bit of every month being named for something I mean it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I mean it might be drink coffee on tuesday MONTH, but but this one I think is actually for real bullying awareness. So we have expert in that Joanna Quinn she's coming up in just moments. Meanwhile let's just take a minute we're gonna focus on this guy huge success with the band although he did not do nearly as well on his own big successful but listen to this one we'll come back and talk about a whole lot you'll like this forget forget rock star radio celebrating the lead singers that made it out of the band and ditched the band and went I forgot the ones that went out on that of course you remember that voice that is the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers Michael McDonald went out on his own and listen to this group he put together to put that near the title of that song you know I know what you want to say it is you want to say it's keep forgetting right but it's not the title of that song is every time you're near and then it's the Michael McDonald all star cast on that his sister Maureen she's singing back up what she sounds great to the bands total to the band members and a total Greg, Steven and Jeff were all in there playing on that. And the baseline who can boom boom, boom, boom, keep forgetting boom, boom. That is that is Lewis Johnson and he's most famous for being from the brothers Johnson. Michael McDonald by far his biggest hit and that has been sampled Holy Cow what a song. That is Michael McDonald from the Doobie Brothers out on his own without his biggest hit. keep forgetting keep forgetting every time you're near or we did a great job Billy Gerard rock star radio USA radio networks glad you are along celebrating the music of the lead singers that made it out of the band and also talked about October. October is bullying prevention month. Now you know that I get a little tired of these months being named what bullying is real thing and we do need to take some steps and we kind of do I don't love it but we have to talk about so we've invited expert Joanna Quinn Joanna joins us in just moments. Miss Drew is along we've got a fabulous end of the show. You're gonna love it hold on tight, great stuff straight ahead. So I want to say it was years ago well I actually did there's no doubt it absolutely was years ago that suddenly my oldest daughter just changed her wardrobe. And I don't mean like like she put on a clean pair of pants. I mean we went from she was a generally speaking neat kid buttoned up nice and you know, neat tight Daddy, you know, we know and the kids were at that time she maybe 910 11 Something like that. And she was generally what just suddenly she wanted to wear like black black vests and and, and black. Like knit things. It was it was a night and day change. And she wanted to dye her hair she beautiful blonde hairs want to dye her dye her hair and it made me stop by us by my apologies by the way Billy Gerard rock star radio so glad you are along you know your USA radio networks blasting us across the fruited plain as only they can last bastion of free speech. So I we it turns out as I've sort of finished history, issues having there was a student in her class who had a miserable home life, and he was taking it out on her and it and it turned into a major a major thing and it was about she was profoundly bullied in a big way. That was not fun. It was not cool. I so comes to me our friends. Meredith I my friend Meredith over at Meredith and Annie Jenks pure since this over this week, and I had to bring it to you because I think this is so important. You know, normally we don't do a lot of serious stuff here. But this one I think is really important. October along with a lot of other things is National Bullying Prevention Month. God I love the way that sounds National Bullying Prevention Month and in thank you to Meredith and the folks over at Janice, because they have helped us to find an eye they have helped us to find educator and advocate Joanna Quinn, Joanna, please say hello to the Rockstar family.

Unknown:

I know Billy Hello, everybody.

Billy Gerard:

I was so glad you're here. I I will tell you I don't love this subject. Because really try honestly, we try to do stuff here that is the family knows we try to do stuff that sort of positive whimsical, sometimes dopey, but I think this one is really genuinely important. It is National Bullying Prevention Month here in October, all the way. By the way, family is my birthday month. If anybody's wondering. Yes, it is. Thank you to 24th of October. So talk to me join what what? It came to us late when this happened to my daughter that those changes in her wardrobe. Were as a result of the bullying. What are some of the other signs if you're if you're you know, at home, most of the Rockstar family as family? What are some of the signs of a person who's been a student, a person who's being bullied?

Unknown:

Yeah, you know, Billy, some of the signs would be if they lose interest in school, all of a sudden, they don't want to take the bus. They try maybe want to do an illogical route to and from school. Home, you know, they come home and say so and so doesn't really like them. Or like your daughter, you know, kind of things just change about them that are just peculiar in your eyes. Right? Yeah, that was pretty peculiar.

Billy Gerard:

i But to be fair, it's my oldest. And so you know, I will often say when you're your first child is sort of like the experimental one. Absolutely. You know, you're Yeah, you know, they're learning to be a child and you're learning to be a parent. And so, it was it took us we, I would say that we picked up on that late. And if it were to happen to one of my other, I have four kids, the family knows if that were to happen and one of my other children we would have, we would have caught it a lot sooner. What's the first step like so let's just say let's just say I got lucky and I caught a little earlier. What is the first step in identifying I think something's going wrong? Uh, you know, my instinct is I'm going to you know, I'm gonna get somebody's parents on the phone. I'm going to go over there and teach them what bullying really means. You know

you are not alone, I'm sure in in thinking that um, however, usually that is not really going to produce the results you want.

Billy Gerard:

No surprise there.

Unknown:

Oftentimes, you'll go and either you know there are times that kids are bullied because that's what they see at home. So that's not going to seem out of the norm to the parent that you're presenting

Billy Gerard:

to. That is a very, very good but by the way, Billy Gerard rock star radio USA radio networks. We are on with the educator and advocate show Anna Quinn, in his National Bullying Prevention Month and I know family a little serious, but I think this is important. I bring it up. It's important. What to do. Right, you've identified this, you know, my gut level instinct is we're gonna go over there and learn something. Right. But that's clearly not the best answer. I mean, good sense takes over hopefully. What What would you suggest joining? What do you think we should do?

Unknown:

So to your point, that's where do you start and to lighten it up a little bit, because as you also said, it is a very serious subject, I just wrote up a book called Greta grace. And in it, she gets bullied. She's a middle schooler, and it's a fiction book. So it's, it's a lighter way for kids also to read about it and parents. But the first thing is, you want your kids to know that it's okay to come to you and talk to you about that without being you know, some kids would be embarrassed or be ashamed that they're going through this. So first of all, right, you want to open up the dialogue and be like, Look, this is not your fault. This is all on the bully this, you just happen to be the target, but it's not your fault. So we will talk about this, and we will figure this out together, and there is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. And then it's up to the parents to decide what role they're going to play, you know, are they going to have an assertive role? Or are they going to be a supportive role where they kind of coach from the sidelines to see if the kid can handle it? Or if the kid wants to handle it themselves? Or do you go straight to personnel at the school and the guidance counselor and the teacher? I mean, of course that's going to depend on the temperament of the child and the maturity level and the situations in the suit the factors in the situation. But open dialogue is definitely where to start and see how you can also kind of ease the kids fears because there is a lot of fear if I say something it might get worse. So it's determining how they can come to you confidently and comfortable comfortably and how you can help

Billy Gerard:

you and listening to educator and advocate Joanne acquit you will find more if you if you by the way we're as as as captivated by what she said as I just was. You will find more about Joanna Quinn at WWE SW on the worldwide way. Joanna Yes, she's J O A and na Quinn qu i n n calm. That's Joanna Quinn comm or on Facebook, if it's up is Facebook back who knows what a mess that was on Facebook and it's back at Facebook slash teen life lessons Facebook slash teen life lessons. I think you're absolutely correct. Would you say bullying is more pervasive today than it has been? Is we on the rise? We flattening? I mean, we're trying our best to try to talk about this. Right?

Unknown:

I think it's always been around I think the awareness is so much greater now than it was which is great. The only problem is is that now unlike, you know pastimes, we have cyber bullying also to deal with. So the awareness and the prevention is so so important.

Billy Gerard:

I think it's it the cyber bullying is like the hidden it's the cancer of right. Because we are, we are so caught bought by, but we are so attached to our devices. And if you have a cyber bully, and it's very difficult, it's you may not catch it two way late in the game.

Unknown:

Right. And the other thing too, is that with cyber bullying, in one way, we're lucky we have screenshots that's beneficial. However, think of all the posts that are pictures that get posted just to make sure somebody knows they weren't invited to something the rest of their friends were invited to or it's just so it's easy for free to fly under the radar because it is humiliating. And it's meant to humiliate, and it's meant to hurt. But it often can go unnoticed as being that.

Billy Gerard:

Yeah, I totally get it, you know, so it's the rock star family knows I teach snowboard to, to to students that otherwise wouldn't have access to to learning snowboard, which is a ton of fun. And so we actually know it's very cool. It's this program. It's called Winter for kids. It's in Vernon, New Jersey, and I spent a lot of time there and they pay me almost no money in it really. I do it. I do it for the love of the students. And to their credit. Part of what they do for us as instructors is they train us on bullying and bullying intervention so that we see it on the hill, we have some level of training, and if they really insist on it, and I will tell you that the training is not much fun. But when I'm done, I'm glad I have it. So let me ask for those who may not have have had the privilege of that additional training. If I see bullying. I'm a regular guy and I have a candy store outside effectives as a candy store on a pizzeria outside of the Rockstar Studios, where we're broadcasting from right now. And in the middle schoolers are out here all afternoon. If I see bullying happening as a just as an adult coming by and I see this happening, what's your advice to adults do you how do you what's your advice to adults that may or may encounter it?

Unknown:

You know And often people don't get involved because they're not sure how to get involved or what they should do. But in all honesty, it's really important to capitalize on that audience that the bully has and turn it towards helping the victim instead of silently supporting the bully, right? Sure. So even if

Billy Gerard:

you hang on, I want to come back to by Rockstar, radio Billy Gerard, the USA radio network. So glad you are along. We are chatting with Joanna Quinn, October National Bullying Prevention Month, and we want to be sure that we get this information out you'll find more about Joanna Joanna Quinn duck 20, you just mix this thing but that by being silent, you actually support the bully.

Unknown:

Right? Because by being surprised by being silent, you're, you know, are you confirming that this person deserves to be bullied? Or it may just be out of fear that you're not saying anything where you're just gonna say thing. But right but as the adults who owns the shop, what a great opportunity to go out and say hey, you know, be be assertive. Ask the kids around like, do you guys. How would you feel if you were in this person's shoes, like teach empathy, or even just even if it's just for those few minutes, demonstrate what empathy would look like or have a conversation about it?

Billy Gerard:

What a great comment you know, we are in our final moments or two if there's one thing you want. We spoke most we speak mostly to parents here at the rock star family. If there's one thing you want the rock star family to know, we have a moment or two what would that be?

Unknown:

Oh my gosh, well, I have a program that super empowered one. And what I would most want them to know coming from that place of empowerment would be that this is not about you. For your child that's being bullied, it is not about you it is about the bully. And that regardless, this bully cannot change or nothing that bully does or says can change or alter anything about you because you are amazing. You will always be amazing and you're here for a great purpose to this world. And this is just a blip in the road that you'll get past

Hi, I'm Danica Patrick, and proud and watching my nieces grow, play and learn is amazing. But not every child gets to be carefree. One in six kids in the US are hungry, one in six. That little girl sitting alone at the playground, she can't play like the other kids. She doesn't have the energy because she's hungry. School lunch will be her only meal today. It breaks my heart that this is the reality in our country. But it's something that Feeding America is working to change. Each year the feeding American network of food banks rescues billions of pounds of good food that would have gone to waste. This food is then provided to families and children in need. Being a kid should be about using your imagination, learning and having fun. These children shouldn't have to miss out on simply being a kid because they're hungry. To find out how you can help end childhood hunger in your community visit feeding america.org

Marie Ruffolo:

well a lot of people like to be anonymous you know

Billy Gerard:

we're not going to name a but but you know I do mentioned everything if you want to be a part of the program so we get we read them all we get a lot so it's hard to respond everybody but we read them all this was so this one did come to a sending an email to bill at Rockstar dot today it's Bill at Rockstar dot tonight. And this this when we talked about this, I think this came because last week Murray we talked a lot about being happy about being happy about trying to lift yourself out of this quagmire of what has been COVID and now we're getting all of the new variants. And we have Fauci that's talking about the holidays. You know, and I think yeah, no, no, no, I just think the stress level is up and it's very up Yeah, no doubt right in it. So this came to insert says do you a ready to start your own gratitude journal? i Are you a journal.

Marie Ruffolo:

You know, for years, I actually was and then I got lazy and then I stopped. But I did for many, many, many years. I did keep a journal. And then it became the same stuff. That's a while because

Billy Gerard:

Because Because my life is my life is not interesting enough to write.

Marie Ruffolo:

Well, I found that bound with me so

Billy Gerard:

I will share with you I do find that Writing helps me work through certain emotional processes, like significant change significant grief, significant challenges. I do find that if I write in that if I if I take the time to write that write that all out. It does really help to clarify my thinking on a lot of things.

Marie Ruffolo:

Well, that's another way of journaling. So

Billy Gerard:

you know, I don't journal but I will but I will. Like I will. I will. My go to move is to spend the time in and write it not that anyone ever reads it. But I it's the exercise for me to actually go through the thought process to go through the to work out all the emotional kinks as it were. Alright, the secret to happiness is what was sent to us in speaking English there rock star, everyone seems to need a bit more happiness in their lives during these times. So, psychologists recommend practicing gratitude, you practice gratitude.

Marie Ruffolo:

You know, probably probably not enough because you have to be, you know, get into the habit of doing it all the time, sometimes late at night when I'm falling asleep. I do. Thank you. No,

Billy Gerard:

thank you. Sorry, look, you know, like the, the man above there. Yeah, I appreciate it. Well, I don't understand all that. I, you know, I am, when I was a young man, I, you know, I was very much into trying to develop my, my thinking myself, my who I was all of that sort of crap. You know, everybody goes through when they're at a certain age, right, I was given the advice to adopt this attitude of gratitude. And I will tell you, that was game changing for me actually came with a couple of other things. That was I took a word out of my vocabulary at the same time, I took the word problem out of my vocabulary, and I replaced it with the word challenge. So I don't have any problems, but I have our challenges.

Marie Ruffolo:

We are ahead of the curve

Billy Gerard:

in so the attitude of gratitude and in the idea that really nothing is a problem. That's just a challenge or a puzzle like that. Yeah, it's just something we need to work through. Now. It's not really a problem. So there you go. So tomorrow anonymous listener, by the way, I got you and a long list of others, Billy Gerard Rockstar radio practicing the attitude of gratitude you do to hold on tight Marie and I'll be right back.
