Oh, and tonight I have to mention, we are telling the bumper music but you know I a listener wrote in it like Billy, what are you talking about his bumper? Like like you're gonna bumps like what is that? So the bumper music for as my friend rush would say, for those of you in real Linda, the bumper music is that music that sort of changes the segments. So we have actually four cuts of it. There'll be a cut of it now and then a cut of it at the end as we head into news and then a cut of it in the first segment of the second half hour and then of course as we depart the program and we say Until next time and I and then I miss you for the next for the following week and you have to wait until the Rockstar returns so that's the bumper music that bumper music is that fade in and out but the plumber music this week is all instrumental all instrumental album should we did Capella music a couple of weeks back you know that is that all voice and so now this week we're going to skip the voice and we're going all Capella to is compelling music and listen to this when I'm not going to share where listen it I just love this sound and you will to listen to this hear so he the sound of Philadelphia that his tears will be quite M S S B? I have a dog that you love that dating Tales from the doctor. So I have invited the author a Susan Hartzler to talk to us about her book. I'm not single. I have a duck Susan welcome say hello to the Rock Star Nation. Hey, Rock Star Nation. Hey, Susan, I know I have to share with you. When I saw your when I saw this email about your book, I really I thought that the title strikes me is is going to be sort of funny stories of my crazy dating life with my dog. Which there's a few of those in there. There's definitely more than a few of these in here. But was I read through the book, you actually start talking about some very serious very, very, in a very honest and in what I would have said is a shockingly honest way

Unknown:

Well, the way I thought of this is if I was going to do a memoir, I got to tell it all warts and all so you know that's what I set out to do.

Billy Gerard:

So the book begins and rock star family I think I really this is a terrific read especially this time of year it's I'm not single I have a dog Susan Hartzler in the dating Tales from the bark side and it is a an amazingly honest story and I it was heartwarming actually it doesn't end the way that you the way that you think it might so the story begins we meet you when you're you're in your 30s I guess your late 20s 20 Late 20s

Unknown:

I was dumped yet again by a man who turned out that he was engaged the whole time I dated him

Billy Gerard:

so oh my goodness. Yeah, you're living a double life guy.

Unknown:

Yeah, exactly.

Billy Gerard:

You know it's remarkably common. I don't mind sharing with you you know the Rock Star Nation knows I play competitive eight ball and so I have a fairly large sort of social group in playing competitive pool in a lot of this and I hear this from many of the single people that that that is not that is not an unusual story Yeah, it's not fun no no. statement for men by the way. Men that men minutes all bed men met listen me. Yeah. Number one of being a man. honesty. Honesty trading. Yeah, I mean, really come on. Life's too short and fellas beat honesty. Alright, so you so you, you've come out of a terrible relationship and you're thinking to yourself, what I really need is a friend. And you decide that's going to be a dog.

Unknown:

Well, I grew I thought back about the the love of my life, which was a little ugly too. Well, I'm much as a little girl. This dog would do anything for me. Her name was siesta. My dad named er siesta because it was the only Spanish word he knew. And she was a

Billy Gerard:

great name. Great name.

Unknown:

I know. So I just said you know, I want unconditional love. I didn't just want a friend. I wanted someone that would love me no matter what. There you go. So I went to the pound just to look

Billy Gerard:

Sure. Audio story. I'm ready. I'm just gonna go look. Yeah, I was just gonna, you're listening to Rockstar radio. I am as my friend Dennis Miller would say the aforementioned Billy Gerard. She is author of I'm not single. I have a dog Susan Archer, and you are hearing us on your very favorite USA radio network station. We're talking about the the genesis of I'm not single. I have a dog brand new book and a touching book. So you're in you're going to the pound, and you're gonna you're gonna we're just gonna look, you know, we're just gonna look. Yeah,

Unknown:

exactly. And I locked eyes with this beautiful. She looked like a white wolf. When she was in the back of her cage. And she was shaking. And, you know, she she looked how I felt because that's how I felt after being dumped again.

Billy Gerard:

I'm sorry. That's

Unknown:

yeah, but you know, I just, I just felt her pain. I felt her her fear. And I just said, That's my job. They go, Oh, yeah. And then I took her home and she proceeded to throw up in my first brand new car ever.

Billy Gerard:

And that that was the way it was the way. Yes.

Unknown:

So I found out that that happens to a lot of dogs that haven't been driven around a lot. Sure. So you know, you just have to put them on anti nausea medication and drive them around a little at a time.

Billy Gerard:

Gotcha. over that fear. That'll get them over that. That'll get them over that hurdle.

Unknown:

Yeah. So we

Billy Gerard:

talked we know I have a I have a hound dog that came from the pound. And he grew up actually in the pound. You know, we got him Yeah. And he had never seen steps before. You had to see him the first time he saw steps. He had to look at him like twice and then he saw me go up them and he was like and you know it took him a second or two he figured it out and he was like if you're going up I'm I'm going up um wow.

Unknown:

Yeah, it was really scared of him that he was

Billy Gerard:

well he was definitely didn't know What to do he because he had never seen them before. You know, he grew up and everything's flat. Right? It just goes to show you you know, you don't think he had never seen snow before the first time he saw snow. You know? Fun things right? So you bring that you bring this little shaking vase. Oh here we go, we're going down the road. And did you find that this? Did she had that she thought did you find what you were looking for

Unknown:

there? I did as far as love but you know, some people will say, Oh dogs, no bad people. But in my you know, basically, blondie at least she she if someone was nice to her. She responded, you know? Nicely, right? Yeah, sure. So, um, you know, she didn't really have like a sixth sense.

Billy Gerard:

For to sniff out the bad fellas. Exactly.

Unknown:

But I did take her on first date, so it definitely will help Oh, yeah. Any guy that didn't like dogs?

Billy Gerard:

Well, they were definitely out. Listen. Yeah, definitely. That's that's a dead giveaway cuz you don't want to if you're not an animal person.

Unknown:

Yeah, that draw a line in the sand for me Sure.

Billy Gerard:

To ensure it is why you are listening Rockstar radio. I am Billy Gerard. We have author Susan Hartzler is on with us. She's got a brand new book. It's called I'm not single. I have a dog. It's dating Tales from the bark side in shooting you in it. I know. It's it does its title sounds like it's going to be funny stories of your, you know, dating mishaps. But in here, you go into some some pretty honest stuff. Do you want to touch on any of that? Or should we just leave that? Should I just leave that as the cliffhanger here in our conversation?

Unknown:

You know, I'm happy to talk about anything because I think that I think the things that are brought up need to be illuminated in our society. And basically, I I wanted to write this book so that other people who maybe have a bad picker like I do, I just kept picking the same guy over and over again, look different, but you know,

Billy Gerard:

different relationship. A different name, but but the same relationship, right?

Unknown:

Yeah. So you know, so I'm a type of person that shouldn't be in or I'm better off. So, you know, and I tried therapy, I tried every you know, I started and

Billy Gerard:

you talk a lot about your therapy. Yeah, very honestly, I will add, you know, one therapist can be very helpful.

Unknown:

Exactly. It helped me a lot when we go but um, yeah, you got to get you got to love yourself. He gets what I learned you have to learn to love yourself. And if you know and do what you want to do, like I I made my life around finding the guy. And it was just so shallow and empty and sad that when I finally let go of that and just figured out what I like to do, and it has you know, it's dog thing so I can live a happy life without the husband kids and white picket fence and I just want to know that there's you can live a happy fulfilling life it doesn't you know, you don't have to follow the norms of society.

Billy Gerard:

Well you know, the norms are as you decided to be especially today I think I think especially today there's there's a much wider acceptance and I you know, I tell I actually I tell anyone who listen, you know what you get in life what you will accept

Unknown:

that's a good one. I like that

Billy Gerard:

you get what you will accept and there comes a point that I just won't accept that yeah, I will I'm so I'm sorry.

Unknown:

I'm gonna say but I you know, took me a long time to get that through my head. But um, yeah, and I just wanted to be around positive love so for me that's the dog world and you know, I've I the dog after Blondie opened up a whole new world for me I did die I do dog agility. I do all sorts of dog sport sheep herding. It's so much fun.

Billy Gerard:

They go they go she is a Susan Hartzler She's the author of a brand new book because we are getting into books season and this is one that you really want to read. She's very honest. In Listen I'll tell you the truth you will laugh you may need a box of tissues and it will open your eyes. It really a touching a touching book. I am not single I have a dog dating Tales from the bark side Susan Hartzler. Go find go find it from Susan in our in our final moment here. Is there a message that you'd like the Rockstar family to know? Is there anything you want to leave us with a thought?

Unknown:

I would just the reason I wrote this book is to help others you know who have who may have a bad picker that you don't have to put like you said you don't have to put up with it.

Billy Gerard:

You don't have to put up with it. Yeah, you don't have to put up you're getting a life which you will settle for what you will accept is mind rockstars advice, except nothing less than the best Billy Gerard Rockstar radio hold on tight. We'll be back with more in two shakes of a lamb's tail. Don't move a muscle

Jeff Borker:

Temperatures in the Midwest are moving towards that freezing mark and that always makes me think about whiskey cocktails that both taste great and warm up the same time. It's fall mixology on this week's double shot of whiskey Jeff Walker here executive bourbon steward and whisky ambassador from the classic drum. I love fall and winter cocktails. Nothing better than sharing great drinks with friends and family around the fire pit on a chilly evening. So let's start with something robust using our favorite rye whiskey. It's called the campfire. This is very simple. Mix two ounces of rye whiskey, your choice. I like a bonded dry, maybe an old Overholt or a Rittenhouse. Then add a quarter of an ounce of maple syrup and make it pure maple syrup, not the national brand stuff that you get in the grocery store. To that add a couple of dashes a chocolate bitters and a couple of dashes of black walnut bitters and mixing an old fashioned glass with a big old chunk of ice and stir thoroughly on a campfire element. Take an orange peel, twist it and squeeze it to release the oils but do it through a flaming match or a flaming pick over the surface of the cocktail that don't freak out but those orange oils are going to ignite with flame and impart its flavor across the top of the glass and resemble a small campfire flame. Looks good and tastes awesome. Now let's do a fall twist on a classic old fashioned This version will be with an Irish whiskey. My choice for this one is Jamison's black barrel. This Irish is triple distilled and aged in double charred barrels for a rich flavor and wonderful smoothness now in an old fashioned glass had two ounces of the Jameson's along with a half ounce of ginger liqueur, a half ounce of simple syrup and three dashes of Angostura bitters. Stir well add a big old chunk of ice and stir in a garnish with an orange peel and a Luxardo cherry the boldness of the Jamison's and the ginger the core combined with the sweetness of the simple syrup really play well together and enhance all of those baking spice flavors. Now let's take a walk on the Scotch side with a smoky Rob Roy. Now the Rob Roy is basically a Manhattan using scotch instead of bourbon or right then mixing in a sweet vermouth. The twist on this one is we're going to use a smoky Scotch to give it an extra kick at two ounces of Johnnie Walker double black to one ounce of sweet vermouth and a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters and an ice filled mixing glass. Stir it well and then strain it into a coupe glass or a martini glass and serve with Luxardo cherry on top the smokiness of the scotch and the sweet vermouth will ignite your campfire senses for sure these are just a couple of fall cocktails for you to try. Let us know what's in your glass these days as the temperatures go down. And this today is powered by humana.com. So trying a new content partner today. So I will share with you this during the pandemic of greatness during the peak of the pandemic when kids weren't going to school and all of that, my dog, my dog would like run and hide. Because well, yes, but here's the reason why. Because the the, the, the my kids would get gym credit if they walk the dog. Ah. So it would be the first one would grab the dog out the door, you know, don't be all excited. I'm going for a walk, then come back, then the next one would grab by the time of third kids look for the dog. The dog is like one, like I've done walking from today. Tonight. So here's the headline. Here's the headline. A dog can be a great exercise partner. Oh, yes, yes. Tell me about.

Marie Ruffolo:

Okay, well, you know, we know that they're good for our whole mental health and things any pet, you know what I'm saying? Next, but the dogs itself because you walked in there. They help us physically. Because look, let's face it. We've been drummed in our heads, you know, you should walk so much get your body moving, it helps with your lower mass and, and flexibility. But sometimes we need a little incentive, I would need a bomb strapped to my chair to let me get out. That's my incense. But I don't have a dog. So there you go. But there's been a lot of research into whether they're encouraging us to exercise. And it's been studies done. And like I was saying it was good. Not only for your physical health, but psychological health as well. And you know, you go outside, and you're spending more time in the parks and on the trails. And that's, you know, I'm thinking that's so good. But we live in the northeast, you know, and it's not always perfect time for, you know, staying in the parks. But I digress. And so they also say that there's studies in Sweden, that dogs may be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk, which is understandable, because it calms you down most of the time. And, and they just support you know, I socially meet people and it's just a good time to be outside and doing things like that. But you have to be really careful. Because not only for people that are older, for falls and things like that, you should always check with your doctor. And you should always check you know, I know you've been doing this with your veterinarian because maybe your dog isn't up to it. They might have arthritis or something like that, and they're not so great on long walks. So, you know, I don't know You know better than I so, you know, and how old is

Billy Gerard:

Unknown:

A couple of years ago, I was in my travels. And I was lower Manhattan and I see this gentleman, you know, a gentleman who's homeless. And I have I have a philosophy there are no homeless people in New York, they're only people that are homeless. You know, they're not they shouldn't be labeled like that, because that just defines them. And that's that's not who they are. They just have a bad rap right now. Anyway, see this gentleman with a dog. And you know, he's telling me hops freight cars to go to Florida in the winter, you know, and I come back the next day to give him a shirt. He's not there. And I thought no, this made an interesting story. Because I Oh, yeah, by the way, I am a member and a peer counselor in a place called fountain house. It's a clubhouse for people that have mental illness. It could be schizophrenia, depression, I was very depressed years ago, hospitalized the whole thing, which is another story. But anyway, I feel much better nowadays. But anyway, I was coming from found a house, or I was doing some work counseling people. And he wasn't there. And I thought, Well, geez, you know, this would make a great story people that are homeless, it affects everybody. So I wrote up a little couple of pages for our little newsletter that we have that go out to like 1000 different members of finance and stuff. I tried to sell the story, and it didn't work out. And I wrote is a play what is the play? Well, it's about this young lady. She's got kind of a nothing life. And she is a copywriter wants to be a writer. Besides CI, a great story would be people that are homeless, it affects everybody, tourist residents, kids, adults, you know what I'm saying? Bill? Yes. Alright, so I want to share with you, before you get into the story of this. Sure. No, I haven't I haven't spent most of my life in my career in in, right, where you were in Time Square writing right here in the New York Metro. I can't tell you the number of the homeless folks that have stepped over, walk over walked around. All of them all mentioned you. Every time I talk to somebody who's homeless, they go, hey, you know, Bill, you know, well, I'll tell you what I did rich. Years ago, I decided, I decided this. And that anyone who asked me for money, I was going to take small money and change my pocket. And I was going to put it in a different pocket. If you asked me for money, I was going to take the money out of that pocket and give it to you, which I had to ask for. That's great. If you ask me, I would give the money, whatever amount of money money I had in that pocket. And if someone else asked me if there was money in that pocket, I would give it. I never used to do that. Because there's just so many people. You know, how much money I just gave it to? Rich? I gave it the left pocket? Was that my plan? And well, I'll tell you what, Charlie really got me. He knew your play because I'll tell you what I did probably five or seven years ago, I decided that was not enough. Because I would just give the money and walk on what I and this really changed my heart by the way you are listening. I am Billy Gerard Fish's Rockstar radio. He is rich courage. We're talking about his play list everybody. Yeah, and you are on listening to us on your favorite USA radio network station. If you are not getting us on the black border change which was this was I decided that I was that these were people like that, like their grace of God go I thought I was going to not just give them whatever I had and whatever was in my my pocket my small money pocket, I was going to give them I was going to stop, look them in the eye and say, Hey, stay warm, or eat or I was for one moment. Just a moment. I really going to give them a we're going to have a human interaction. Who exactly that's what the plays messages all about is that there's a line in it that says people need each other perhaps desperately. You know, perhaps it's your I mean the money and the housing and all that of course we need that stuff. But without each other. We have nothing. No, you know, and I'll tell you a show I have told the story that you show us what your play is very touching the rock star. I have told that story what I've just shared with you many times to many of my you know to my rock star friends and lock Star families in this and I'm sure you may have heard this also this is my this is the response I hear more often than not quite honestly it makes me more throw up. I hear back Well, they're just gonna take that money and go and buy drugs. Or, or I want to give them, I just want to give them a sandwich for I want to give them a baggie with a toothbrush and in. And I'm like, I'm like, first of all, if you have no idea how much money I have just flown away as we speak for submission to me, I bet we should, How about how about I not judge? How about I just say, here's a person who needs something. And maybe most of all, what they need is a tiny bit of human attention that comes with a couple of dollars attached 100%. Billy Gerard rock star radio USA with no cheese, which courage I want you to which we have to know how to win how to how to get to listeners to get towards this play. How do I how do I get them towards that? You can go to my YouTube channel, rich courage. It's two words rich, and then courage, and then NYC. And you will see the very last dance of homeless show. And it's a photograph of a man sitting with a sign on his lap, an older guy and a young girl talking to him. And yeah, it's an hour and 20 minutes, 80 minutes. It's wonderfully put together so that you don't have to watch the whole thing at once because she goes and she talks to a guy and she talks to another woman and she talks to another guy and they're all like little separate stories. You can actually pause it, go get a snack, you know, get some popcorn, come back. Now watch the rest of it. Because I know people have short attention spans nowadays. I got a lot going on. But by the end of the day, I won't be taking any breaks. You'll be sitting watching the whole show. It'll make you cry. It'll make you laugh. It's got some amazing characters. You got a Vietnam veteran. You got a lady who's just escaped from a psychiatric ward. You've got a lady who went blind at age 13 And she's this young woman of color who went blind and you know lost her family and she she winds up crying and then smiling and you know there's a lot of and then at the end I won't tell you what happens but she they keep telling me you got to meet this guy Joe, you got to meet this guy. Joey makes me look like a lucky guy. If you meet him in his dog, and he breaks her heart breaks her heart breaks to her and again with any kind of brings her life and there's actually an uplifting ending. It's not a depressing play Bill either. Oh, looks like we lost Bill guys. Well, I'll keep talking. You just break in when you get in Cadillac. Alright. Are there who is your favorite character in the story? I have two one character called nobody. Short seen. Woman Ah, that was mine. You just got mine. Oh, she has for your listeners she has absolutely I had to put a character in. It had no story that had nothing. She's actually in the first few minutes of the play. She comes out and says I've lost everything. I have nothing can you give me something and that's some syrup. Because there's a lot of people out there that have just been reduced to that. Ah, you are listening to USA Radio Network. I am Billy Gerard. This is rock star radio. We are in the last bastion of freedom last bastion of free speech USA radio network. That's it's courage. We're talking about his new play this place called the less sense of homeless joke. And I want you to go find this because it is a story is a it's it's it's a story that needs to be told to be fair. It's just it's a play that you really truly need to see. And in unless you're here in the New York Metro unless you're on time square by promising and or a rock star family member you're not going to find out about it. That's the beauty of being in the rock star families you find out about these sorts of things and you get to meet famous people like which goes, I just we were done at a final few minutes. Can you give us a little snippet? Because I know you have had a very colorful life that has brought you finished in when I'm sure because I your life takes a lot more than the moments that we have let's just a touch of what brought you to this place. Very simply, I was a very isolated kid and my mother father fought like cats and dogs and then I went up to her I was the old people will know what this means a latchkey kid, we used to say in the old days, I'm 61 years old. That meant your mother was either working or doing chores or never really talking to you or spending time with you. She did everything for me physically, but you know, I mean, you know materialistically but anyway, I grew up and then went to college. I was a smart kid. I was 15 I got into college, but then I was very isolated. And I was depressed. I got this bad depression who will ever know what it was? And it lasted for decades. And I bounced around messenger jobs, all kinds of jobs. Some of that's in the play in different characters. And the evolution of this play is I just you know, I was feeling better and these people weren't. They were on the streets and you You know, there's again, I go back to this line from the play, you know, people need each other, perhaps desperately, you know, just because somebody is down and out doesn't mean their stories not worth as much as yours and they might not be. They might be just as valuable to you as you are to them if you just give them a chance. And, you know, I'm saying all the serious stuff by the way, if you see the play, it's not depressing. Oh, homeless people's gotta be depressing. Not at all. There's a lot of laughs in the play. There's a lot of tears. The ending is very uplifting. It's very hopeful. And it's the very last dance of homeless show. Rich courage NYC on YouTube. Rich, I really appreciate you I appreciate the work that you're doing. And from the rock star family, we wish you absolutely the very best family hold on tight. We got more away over time in this segment. We got more great stuff straight at rich right leg. Thank you. Those folks. They are all somebody maybe once they're close, then maybe even loved. Now they're just drift, homeless and alone. And they're everywhere in front of the fancy shops of Soho beneath the bright billboards Times Square from the cafes of Hell's Kitchen to the condos. Murray Hill, East Village, West Village, Upper East Side, Upper West Side from Wall Street to Washington Heights, the disenfranchise the outcast societies lost and forgotten children. Manhattan's homeless people. The castaways stranded like Uncharted Islands in the Stream of more fortunate New Yorkers. They called the street with hunted eyes like wandering spirits, watching a world they once knew pass them by close enough to touch the just out of reach. They are untethered, hopeless, adrift on a concrete asphalt Ocean with No safe harbor in sight. They are a statement they are

Hi I'm Danica Patrick and proud and watching my nieces grow, play and learn is amazing. But not every child gets to be carefree. One in six kids in the US are hungry, one in six. That little girl sitting alone at the playground, she can't play like the other kids. She doesn't have the energy because she's hungry. School lunch will be her only meal today. It breaks my heart that this is the reality in our country. But it's something that Feeding America is working to change. Each year the feeding American network of food banks rescues billions of pounds of good food that would have gone to waste. This food is then provided to families and children in need. Being a kid should be about using your imagination, learning and having fun. These children shouldn't have to miss out on simply being a kid because they're hungry. To find out how you can help end childhood hunger in your community. Visit feeding america.org brought to you by Feeding America and the Ad Council. Hey go
