And so showing those days when we were we went out on a Saturday night and we went dancing and we danced the night away. So we're gonna do that we're gonna do a little more of that. So Rockstar radio Billy Gerard thank you to Jules H and Pixabay for their help with our theme. And let's jump right into the program and our 70s Flashback bumper music they'll move a muscle Free Radio straight ahead Next, mark your calendar next Friday next, then next Friday by the way that would be February to fourth that's assuming you're hearing this close to or near its broadcast original broadcast. So original release delta b i Forgive me I really need to work on this. Billy Gerard Rockstar radio so glad you are alone. I am joined by my partner in crime he my evil twin Marie ruffle. G Jersey girl is with me. Hello Marie hosts thingsMarie Ruffolo:
oh I know that your calendar is marked for this I know you've got the big red circle around Friday the fourth we will we will be off and in to the Winter Olympics. But before we get to that I actually want to get I this I think is way I think this is one that winter in particular we're going to come back to that but I think that this is is a story worth telling in it. And the part that I want to start the story with happened on January the 20th. So what I'm not sure where this broadcast finds you but on the 20th at the X Games out in Vail so the the X Games Now if for those who aren't familiar with the X Games, it's sort of a Gen X thing it was began when a ski what really snowboarding sort of started it it was when they you know skiers one to ski without poles they wanted to ski on skis frontwards and backwards. So the skis have turned up tips both sides. They wanted to hit jumps and do more than just a you know a helicopter or touch their back or that's where they really wanted to take the sport to a new place that had never been before place that no one had thought of. And with that The X Games were born. And it's a snowboarding halfpipe it's the ski jump. And it's more than, you know, it's it's way more than what the Olympics think about it's all of these crazy young people that crazy it's young people, mostly that are that are just in just invigorated about the sport, and they want to push themselves and with them the sport to the next place, whatever that is. And they see no limits in anything. So I entered that on that in back in 2014 is one of these, one of these young bucks just got a buck by the name of Trevor. Kennison. Trevor is he is skiing the back country in Vail. He's a Colorado local. He's skiing back in Vail and he gets caught. He hits a jump catches it the wrong way catches the edge. He's a snowboarder like me and I'm with you. catches the edge the wrong way. It's the snow the wrong way. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Comes down the wrong way. Several hours later, rescue arrives. Oh, Trevor learns that he has crushed a spine. Oh, punctured. And he is paralyzed.Marie Ruffolo:
Now, yeah.Billy Gerard:
So and for for most human beings on planet earth that would represent the end of winter sports career. Oh, save possibly a career in the broadcast booth. Oh, because you are paralyzed from the waist down. Right. Now for Trevor? Really, Trevor is so much bigger than that. He is so much bigger. Trevor is so is the trend. The name is Trevor Kennison, and he is he is a real life living hero. He is the real thing. He had designed for him a snowboard with a seat. And he had ski poles designed. So there's a poles with skis on the bottom of it. And he can. He can sit on his snowboard with his ski poles, and he'll get down the hill better than most skiers. I know. Oh, my goodness, what, Trevor? That's cool, right? You'd say to yourself, bravo, Trevor, holy cow, you came back from this big thing. And you're and you're re cutting a new coat, you're cutting a new trail, bravo to you. And Trevor would look back at you and say something like, I'm a long way from done. Because this this on the 20th at the X Games, one of the competitions is this thing called the big jump. And it is what it sounds like. It's a big jump shot. On the order of 20, maybe 30, sometimes more feet of air. And the idea is you're not It's not like those ski jumps that you see in the Olympics, which that giant one we know used to be the Audi commercial with a car drove up and it's not like that. The idea is you get up in the air. And it's what do you do with those three or four or five seconds you have a flight? What tricks can you do? And it's it's Oh, it's amazing. Oh, it's amazing. It's really a thrill. It's a thrill to watch. It's exciting to try to learn to do so. Trevor it has determined that he is going to be the very first adaptive snowboarder to fly big air. And on the 20th He did it. Oh unblock show, The Rock Star stance. We're sits and salutes Trevor a Kennison who? Who redefines courage and greatness is down here Trevor Kinnison and the X Games. It's absolutely worth it. Look it up. Find it online. Watch the video as he flies big air watch. There's a view where you can see what he sees as he leaves the top of the hill and all you see is Colorado below him. You see it? It's at Aspen. You see, he sees the town of aspen below him and he is high on a hill like an eagle perched on a branch I can't even imagine it's really truly unimaginable Billy Gerard Rockstar ready to saluting the heroes Trevor Trevor, you are true rock star we salute you. I will be saluting many more I submit to you by the way you rock star radio USA radio network. If you would like to be a part of the program if you know someone who is like Trevor Kennison and and is a hero and want to share that with us please send an email send it to bill at Rockstar dot today we do our best to respond to nearly all of them. I want to suggest some music for pumper music. We're happy to hear it and we'll do our best to to engage with you happy to have you as part of the program. We are going to Beijing China for the Winter Olympics beginning on the fifth. Yes. So what did you What is your favorite winter sport or your favorite winter Olympics?Marie Ruffolo:
I got a few of them. I have I love like the ski jumps and stuff like that. And then I have the luge because it reminds me a great adventure.Billy Gerard:
Yeah. Yeah.Marie Ruffolo:
Reminds me of going in those water things. Oh man, I love them. Because I'm muine the only one. I'm a wish.Billy Gerard:
You're a one way we can even say that on the radioMarie Ruffolo:
only roller coaster I've ever been on was a great No, not great adventure. It was in Disney World. What do you call that? The space? Mountain? Sure. Yeah, yeah. And that's the only other than that. I'm never sure. So to me, the lose reminds me of oh, it's like that. Oh, you're watering and you're going? And then you go down?Billy Gerard:
Yep. Wow. I would say you know what I would tell you is it I can't tell you how many years ago it was now. It's it's it's been a while. But it was during the Winter Olympics. A buddy of mine. We were at well, it's got to be if he can't it's got to be a while ago. Because my office was in Times Square. And oh my god. Yeah. And you remember the radio station we were at together. And New York it and so one of the guys that I work with says hey, but we do for lunch. So why don't we get some lunch? We'll go to this this little place that we like for lunch. And maybe we can we'll you know we'll watch a little Olympics. So we go over there to have you know, having lunch in the head on for the first time the obvious middle of the day in New York and I don't remember where the Olympics were then I wish that I did. But they obviously must have been somewhere far away because the timezone shift, you know, all of that. And so they had on curling?Marie Ruffolo:
Oh, I never knew what that was till I saw it.Billy Gerard:
Right. Right. In we were then this is gonna be 1518 years ago in some number like that. In we were captivated by by curling. Yeah, as you watch this as you watch them, you know, that wouldn't have thought that way. was the first time I'd ever seen the first time I've ever heard of it for I mean, Curlin. I thought that was you know what you did with a 12 ounce? You know, like IMarie Ruffolo:
thought it was lifting weights. Yeah,Billy Gerard:
no. Yeah, absolutely. By the way, Billy Gerard rock star radio this year favorite USA radio network station. So glad you are along. And we're talking about the Winter Olympics here. The oh gee Jersey girl, Marie ruffler was with me. Let me start on the fourth of February. And they will be going on through the 20th. In there will be in Beijing. This has been quite the quite the lot of a lot of controversy. This is actually now with COVID COVID coming back, the Omicron vaut in the variantsMarie Ruffolo:
tough a bit that Beijing was the first I need they did opening and closing. So that's like a big deal.Billy Gerard:
Yeah, absolutely. But we're gonna be talking more about this as as time goes on. I think the you know, I might I think everyone probably has went has Olympic memories that some of mine would be, you know, the ice skating. My mom and dad would always have the ice skating on, you know, the, the figure skating. Oh, waitMarie Ruffolo:
a minute, I got to stop you. But first of all, it's the first time I misspoken that that they did Summer and Winter Olympics. Yeah, shameBilly Gerard:
countries. Yes. Oh, you know what you're absolutely correct is that typically they are split up that's absolutely true. Typically, you would have the Summer Olympics here and the North Olympics there. But China is on a mission to rule the world and they figure the Olympics are way to do it. On the Olympics, and and, and, and rare earth products, they're gonna they're gonna rule the world. So Billy Gerard rock star, so glad you are alone. We're talking about the Olympics. We're gonna look into some athletes. We're going to look into AI we're gonna be talking a little bit more about this as the weeks go on as we do our Olympic read lead up and run up to the 2022 Olympic Games. Hopefully they will. They will go off without too much trouble as from COVID and we will have a successful season of tough competition. Rockstar radio Billy Gerard do G Jersey girl is with me this your favorite USA radio network station. Don't move a muscle. We got more great stuff. More Olympic level stuff coming right up. Hold on.Jeff Borker:
The term white whiskey has come up several times lately in conversations with fellow whiskey geeks like myself, so I thought it might be interesting to talk about it with the double shot fans here as well. Let's unpack light whiskey on this week's double shot of whiskey. I'm Jeff Walker executive bourbon steward and whisky ambassador from the classic DRAM. So what exactly is light whiskey? No, it's not a diet whiskey and it's not a lower proof expression either light whiskey category was actually created back in 1968. You see in the late 60s and early 70s, American distillers were trying to fight against the tide of vodka and other clear spirits. The younger populations tastes were changing and whiskey was considered the drink of their fathers and grandfathers that is when they turn to Vodka, rum and tequila. This had a great impact on the whiskey industry. As supplies of age whiskey were high and the demand simply went away. So just what makes a spirit a light whiskey just like bourbon and scotch, there are specific parameters that qualify a distillate as a light whiskey number one it must be made of grain similar to the standard rules of whiskey and it must be the still between 160 and 190 Proof Secondly, it must be aged in USD or uncharred new barrels with no specific maturation time. Thirdly, it must have been distilled after 1968 And finally, if it contains less than 20% Straight whiskey it is considered a blended light whiskey so really key points around distillation proof and aging. Remember bourbon cannot be distilled higher than 160 proof and it must be aged in new charred oak containers like whiskey flavor profile is designed to come in somewhere between bourbon and vodka. Higher distillation proofs strip more of the flavor elements from the Spirit so distilled at 190 Prove vodka has most of its flavors removed like whiskies distillation range takes out most of the classic whiskey flavors but still leaves a bit giving it notes that vodka just doesn't have the USD or uncharred barrel takes away other whiskey flavors that come in from the oak. Many folks think that light whiskey gives you more of a subtle whiskey flavor with more of the delicate feel of a Scotch late whiskey has had some success in the beginning but it faded away fast MGP and Indiana produced all a lot of light whiskey and many distillers are turning to those stocks today for blending Joseph Magnus is Murray Hill club blends 11 and 18 year old bourbons with nine year old light whiskey other distillers like Austin 101 in Texas are distilling their own light whiskey so if you see a bottle of white whiskey on the shelf, give it a try and experience something completely different. Yeah, I just want to say that. You know, they crushed it, and I'm happy for them, but it's growing pains anyway. So this woman Kelly, down Dowling in Connecticut, and she shared the story that her little girl had a cold, you know, so she, you know, put her down for her nap and everything like that. But then Henry the dog, he kept like, like you said, using his head as a bad battering ram it to shove his way to the nursery. And Kelly was always upset about that because she didn't want the baby to wake up. But this time she woke up the baby and she was crying. And something sounded very, very wrong. And so the mom took her downstairs, she was struggling to breathe. That is the worst feeling in the world. And that dog knew something was going on with that babyBilly Gerard:
is not there's some foul a belief that because of the animals for your four legged or that they're that they're either insolent or you know just are unaware and that's simply untrue. Every every animal is it is my opinion it is my belief because I'm not sure about like mice because I don't have pet mice but my bet is every every animal particularly birds, mammals that sort of thing. Have a personality. Yes, I believe that they have and I don't know that I've told a story here on Rockstar it but for years and years and years at at Thanksgiving I might with the rock star family would go to an island resort in the Florida Keys. And there we would often see this. We feed the dolphins they have a dolphin. We only have a few moments. But long story short, my daughter who at the time is probably six goes to feed the dolphin for the second time. The fish comes right up to her and the woman the dolphin trainer says have you been here before you oh yeah, we've been here like last year a year before? She said the fish's name was Nemo. Nemo remembers her Ah yeah. So listen if the pup does that you loosen me to pay attention they they trust me when I tell you I don't I don't buy into this whole thing that you know the dolphins are smarter than we I don't buy into any of that. Don't miss that segment. At the very end we're going to share with you a little insight radio that you will not want to miss and Miss Drew's along and more great radio to hold on tight. And let's take a minute now and just take a little bit of a flashback to the 70s Tell me where were you when this was the number one song in the world? Join the compound next to the rock stars a state of the Rockstar we live out here in in the New York Metro and my neighbor. My neighbor is she's elderly she's been in that she's a she's an original owner of that portion of the of that that are of her home in her husband has passed and she's retired and she's there with her handicap So boys I'm sorry Billy Gerard rock stock radio Your favorite USA radio station. The OG Jersey girl Marie, she's along sale. Right here. When you were in the break room we're having a the quarter. Just here we got fresh coffee. So the mic I have my neighbor I wheat, the rockstars compound is on a corner. And so we only really have a neighbor to one side. And so that neighbor, she's been there for all the years that we've been there and then her family's there as originally actually had the whole thing built all those years ago. So she's 91. And she's, again, she's still got game, but that's been her home and she's there with her son who's a, you know, who's who's mentally handicapped, but he's functions. He's got a job, he works for the town. He's good. He's in his 50s. You know, he just, you know, he's just not quite at the level of drive a car, that sort of thing. But he's a great guy. Anyway. So and she has my neighbor has two other two other grown children. One is an executive in Boston in the construction industry. And the other is a school teacher somewhere way out in the foothills of Jersey somewhere like, like me, like, Oh, my goodness out there in Jersey somewhere. So we get the phone call, that that that fleet. You know, we help the neighbor every now and again because that's what neighbors do. Right? You know, you need something this step, particularly if they're, you know, the older neighbors, right? We get the phone call that that the neighbor needs somebody to come over. She thinks one of her kids one of her grown children might be injured. Oh, yeah. So Mrs. Rockstar runs over. Oh man, and listen to wait where the story goes. She's the my neighbor is on the phone, with someone claiming to be a lawyer claiming that her daughter had been in a drunken car accident. And now the lawyer needs $6,000 Right this minute or her drunken daughter will go to jail. Now this is what they're telling that 91 year old over the phone. And to to just to to make all of this real some woman who sounds drunk gets on the phone and says Mom Please send the money. Oh, how awful is that? It's not clearly this is a scam This is Rockstar identified this in about 10 seconds. Yeah. And again and the police were shortly summoned. And we go on, but can you just for a moment Rockstar now put yourself in the place of that 91 year old woman just got the phone call being told her daughter had been in a serious crisis the mother of her grandchildren who come over and trim the trees and take care of you know, you imagine getting that phone call to clearMarie Ruffolo:
I have to tell you something nothing really burns my lieutenant you know I was in Yeah. And he said burns mine navels whatever that meant, but it burns my niggles that Oh these people do this I just can't stand it makes me crazy the showBilly Gerard:
that in short now show of course the police calm and and they're there they say well it's probably a scam out of Africa there's probably very little weekend Yeah, we'll certainly do everything we can but the poor woman the nine my 91 year old neighbor she couldn't even speak to her daughter on the phone she was so emotionally devastated we had you know we had the the daughter had to at the end of the day drive in like to like two hours in from worlds out in map dot New Jersey to come in and like reassure her mom that no no, no, no, no, I'm home. I don't show you like I'm not a drinker. Everything is fine. Can you imagine in that terribleMarie Ruffolo:
now that just just really like heBilly Gerard:
writes me? Well. Apparently you are not alone in being fired up about about these scams, as there are many of them. There are so many there is a woman this was actually fairly widely reported on most of the social media and, and even CBS News, but I don't know why this report is we got out of New York because in New York story 73 year old woman was able to three see through the koehlers live, avoiding a form of fraud that the FBI says victimizes millions of Americans of elderly Americans each year. When the grandmother who asked not only to be identified by her name Jean received the bizarre phone call from her quote unquote an air quotes grandson. She knew she was being allied toMarie Ruffolo:
tell it tell in the background the same. What did she do? What it's theBilly Gerard:
same story? It's the same story right? She's 73 years old and these she's a former nine. Know that this is a lady that's like used to being around the police. This is a lady round here. They call that hotspots she got she got guts. So tell us what happened. I'm sorry, Billy Gerard Rockstar, radio USA radio networks. Marie refloat she's the oh gee Jersey girl and we're in the break room talking about great stuff here God so the so the the the scammer calls this woman thinking I got an easy one here yep. And tell us Marie how this plays outMarie Ruffolo:
well Nassau County doesn't recommend doing this but I said I will I have the money and you know you can come to my house which freaked me outBilly Gerard:
you know I'm gonna pause you here you're gonna have to reach out because my the Rockstar brother in law I have a couple of those but one of my brother in law has way too much time on his hands and so he used to like to get these phone calls and he used to mesh with them you know like oh yeah, I got the gift cards. Oh no, hold on. Hold on. Mike Mike. My son is coming. I'm not sure if I need to go to the bank you know and he will finally he got show many phone calls if you try to call this house now. It goes directly to the do not call hotline so yes, disclaimer, both the national county police do not recommend this and Rockstar radio does not recommend this. And USA radio networks is definitely not recommending this. But surely the scammers call the 73 year old to like tell her some lie about her grandson she's onto it. And what does she do?Marie Ruffolo:
What she said I have the money in the house which like blows my mind like why would sheBilly Gerard:
do back in the day there was a generation that you know no no kiddingMarie Ruffolo:
stuff that they had money in the house?Billy Gerard:
Yeah, my house in my house you struggle to find a core butMarie Ruffolo:
I had a nickel but she said oh she goes oh I don't think he's gonna fall for that but he did. And so what she did was she stuffed in envelopes with paper towels I guess you know feelingBilly Gerard:
good. So good. Yeah, Brownie baby does the brownie.Marie Ruffolo:
Yeah, but she didn't call the police and thank God they came you know what I mean? And by the time that they arrived at her home to pick up the stuff $8,000 Cops were waiting inside and I'm telling you if you saw this video it's great. This guy he gets the envelopes and he walks out the door and the cops tackle them It's pricelessBilly Gerard:
one for the good guys one for one for the good guy so I want you to be aware of these scams I'll tell you there's another there there are more to go way to go Jean by the way we go you know what listen to me you know what you when you when you see injustice and you stand for what's right you've you've truly lived outside of yourself. So to Rockstar applaud you the rock but here we say that we do not recommend thisMarie Ruffolo:
no no don't invite them toBilly Gerard:
but you need to be aware there's a number of other really really truly wicked scams happening oh yeah we get a lot of them here rockstar nation you know we get it Rockstar we get to but if you want to be a part of the program feel free to email anytime it's Bill at Rockstar dot today that's bill at Rockstar dot today send an email along we get you know we try our best we respond to actually most most everyone we get a lot but but but we do the best we can but feel free to make a strong recommendation so Maria love her you know what get one yeah ah so uh the the the scam now that's happening is I got an email the other day of a major retailer looking I won't mention the name because because it wasn't clearly wasn't from them. It was a scam. And a major retailer. There is a gift waiting for you. Oh in this email and get your $50 gift card. Yeah. And included there was no gift card and it's a it's a what they call a phishing scam was best fishing PAH but it was very clever. It was very very clever. The other one that I got that I thought was was exceptionally clever was a postal return the package you shipped there's the shipping questions click here to confirm my address.Marie Ruffolo:
I never heard of that one.Billy Gerard:
It was it looked like from the post office and it said you know the package there's shipping issues. Please confirm your address. Oh my Well of course the idea is you just click and you open the thing and on you know in over the then then the deal is done. So be very careful that I open emails only from people that you either from things that you expect or people that you know never click a link never ever like unless you know where it's going you know who it is never ever, never ever not worth doing it and and our kudos to Jean who took one back for the for the good taken one factor take one back for the good guys in our last minute or so Marie let's just this is another scam that is wildly about that we should definitely point out it's this QR code thing Is everyone familiar with a QR code that's that's squared looking it looks like an ink blot it looks like a roar shock. What do you see in there? Oh, I don't know. I think I see a cup of coffee. Maybe Miller Lite I'm not sure. So the scam now and but it's so the idea is this puts this puts a terrible software, a malware they call it on your on your device in and so most most of the newer phones have a QR code reader built into the camera. So that's what this means is when you see one of these codes of somewhere, you can your camera already knows what a QR code looks like. It will see it and it will tell you what it is. We see this today in restaurants because we're afraid to have menus. If you're a restaurant person, they'll have a QR code on the table. You put your phone over it Yeah, and it bring up the menu on your device. Oh my goodness, we are seeing this the rock star you know part of the rock star businesses direct response. Some of our direct response TV guys are putting the QR code on the TV, you can take a picture with your phone, and it will bring up the the ordering code, that sort of thing. But what but online there are all of these quote unquote QR code readers and they have become the the glue ground for growing number of scammers because yes, it redirects everything to the wrong place.Marie Ruffolo:
Oh I'm just learning what QR codes are andBilly Gerard:
it's really, you know, you know, they were they've sort of been around for a while but they would have gotten wide use with the pandemic with restaurants not wanting to have people share menus and that's when the cute now and so really it's just lately the QR codes have really become what they are. So be very so the rockstars warning just be very careful this is right from the FBI by the way. Be very careful with the QR codes and remember your most of the new phones I mean, you know iPhone 10 Or later on the Galaxy samsung galaxy like six or five or later they're all it's in there just the phone wave the phone or wave the phone over it. Or better yet ask you you know ask you your average 10 year old they'll they'll tell you what to do. Gerard rock star radio try to keep an eye out for you. We only want what's best for you. It's a grouping of those that live in coffins, or a group and in general, a choir of voices. It's a cacophony. It's a group, not necessarily of yours, but a grouping they could CapponiMarie Ruffolo:
know, again. No, it is allowed grouping of sounds that do not go together. A symphony.Billy Gerard:
Ah, yes. Okay. All right. I was close. I was close. I was definitely you're guessing about vampires. And we were heading for comedy value. You can't fire these two fools fast enough Billy Gerard rock star radio. Welcome back. So glad you are along. We're in the break room light though the oh gee Jersey girl is here. Say hello, Marie.Marie Ruffolo:
Oh, he's good to be with.Billy Gerard:
Oh, you're so kind to me. I am so glad that you brought this up. I read this. Early in the month I almost fell down. These two idiots. I just can't get oh, I don't even want to say this on the air family because it appalls me. It makes me sick. I want to throw up these two days Jim Carter and Steve Shaw, both of whom, by the way are somehow or other athletic directors coaches have been involved in have been involved in their lives in student athletics. And I'm actually in fact, I can't even say it because I get so angry. And what happened here and we're gonna come back to what owner Fred grant did before really, but on the Murray you're gonna have to tell the story because I can't do it.Marie Ruffolo:
Oh, I'm telling you. I saw this as Holy moly. These guys were on the air. You know, and like you said they have background and coaching and everything like that. And they're they're making fun of the girls that are saying they're overweight. And why don't they get different uniforms that fit them? They didn't know they were on a hot mic. I don't know if that ever happened to you.Billy Gerard:
Listen, you know, I look I can put on a different day. I'll tell you some funny Hot Mic stories minor or funny? Or funny? This is positively outrageous. I absolutely understand the temptation for boys talk. I 100%. Understand the temptation. And when you're a professional broadcaster, the first thing you learn is you put all of your all of your prejudice go away side, yes, because you wouldn't what you think inevitably you will say and you need to put if you whatever your concerns are for color, for race, for size, for shape, for an ability for inability for upwards for backwards for the other way, it all must go away because invariably, at some point it will come out. And this is a brilliant example, here are two guys who have been doing this and they know the power of words, words have power. And if you're out there playing athletics, if one of your kids is a student athlete, I don't care if they're good or bad if they ride the bench or not. If they have the courage to put the uniform on and try. They win so Have a win. Now look, I'm not one of these that buys into this everybody's a winner because I don't buy into that either. No competition requires that some win and some lose and both teach lessons. I mean, not a trophy for everybody. I'm not a believer in that my kids all compete you know, the Rockstar competes in many levels and losing hurts and the day that it stops hurting is that data they give up? It should always hurt. It's a lesson that matters. But this is absolutely inexcusable Carter show you're out and I really truly I hope no one lets you back in. That's owner Fred grant owner owner Bravo Fred doing the right thing. That's how it's done. Owner of w h o u 101. FM. In Maine. He said listeners of her two men criticizing players on their junior varsity team. Can you imagine Oh my goodness. Grant told a media outlet that as soon as he heard they made the conflicts from listeners. I gotten phone calls immediately. Next day, and in a statement grant apologized for the men's actions and fired them.Marie Ruffolo:
